This morning we had a fabulous Tu B'shevat Seder lead by Rabbi Cohon and Rabbi Holtz. We sang and we dance and tasted lots of food that come from the earth! We are glad so many parents were able to attend and are greatly appreciative for those who helped set up and clean up.

Celebrating trees - Tu B'shevat

Tu B'shevat is the celebration of the trees. What wonderful things do the trees give us; fruits, nuts, shade, paper, wood and oxygen. The children have been enjoying celebrating this holiday and are looking forward to our Tu B'shevat seder tomorrow where we will taste the fruits from the trees and honor them with songs and blessings. You are welcomed to join your child at this special meal.
Look at all the wonderful projects the children have been making for Tu B'shevat:

In writing this blog and thinking about Tu B'Shevat I am happy that more and more things are becoming electronic, it was a wonderful way to view things as well as a way to save resources.
What can you do in your family to help the environment?

Learning while playing

Today on the playground I observed children learning while playing. The two girls were pretending they were doctors and examining the bike while the two boys were stuck behind the girls and all they wanted to do was go. They sat there for a while and the next thing I new they were turned around going the other way. The figured it out! What great problem solvers!

Continuing Education

It is important that in any career that you stay up to date in the latest research and same applies for the field of Early Childhood Educators. Recently Lana, Jaclyn, Cindy Sadowsky, Lyn and myself went to a fabulous conference in Phoenix for Jewish early childhood educators. It was one of the best conferences we have attended.
I went to a few sessions on blogging, one of different personalities and one on behavior. The ones on blogs gave me more ideas for improving what we are already doing. So I look forward to showing you what your children are learning and doing in the classroom through this blog.
The session on different personalities allowed me to realize that every child, parent and teacher are very different. I learned that everyone responds and acts in a different way. This knowledge will help me in my interactions with everyone.
The one I would like to share more with you is the session I went to on behavior. This was not a session on what disciplinary actions one could take, but gave me insight on how to manage behaviors. At the beginning of the session the instructor asked what we wanted to get out of the session. The number one question everyone had was about biting. What she did say was that she did not have the answer; if she did it would not be such a big problem everywhere. What she does know is that it is a reaction; that is can happen in a matter of seconds even if the teacher or parent is standing right there. She also said that it is developmental. It is a way needs can be met or a sensory input can come from it.
The other thing I got out of this session was that we need to be teaching the children the right thing to do. At young ages they are still learning how to behave; so we must teach them. When for example if they are having trouble sharing a toy you should walk them through the proper things to say and do. So if a child takes a toy out of another child's had you teach them to say, "can I have that toy." "I am playing with it." "Can I play with it when you are done?" "Yes." "When will you be done?" "Three minutes."
I feel so fortunate to be able to continue my education. I know that everyone who went to this conference feels motivated with new knowledge and ideas.

Enrichment classes at The Strauss ECE

Did you know that we have wonderful enrichment classes here at The Strauss ECE?  We have many classes; some are morning and some are afternoon.  These classes add a wonderful learning and stimulating experiences for all children.

Dance and creative movement are one of our children's favorite classes.  One is a morning class and the other is in afternoon. This is a class where children get to move the music.  Babies bounce up and down while toddlers crawl, walk and jump; and our preschoolers begin to learn gross motor skills.

Gardening is in the morning activity that uses children's senses.  Children get to see, feel and smell soil and plants.  Older children learn the science of how a plant grows and about different kind of plants.  This is a great hands on experience for all ages.

Yoga is offered for our preschool aged children.  They have been enjoying learning different poses and breathing techniques.  We have been able to incorporate yoga into our classroom when trying to create a peaceful setting.  This is also an afternoon activity and has been a wonderful addition to our program.

Judaics with Rabbi Holtz is a class for our older children.  They get to know Rabbi Holtz on a one to one setting.  They hear stories and learn about the Jewish culture.  Children enjoy sharing what they are thankful for with Rabbi Holtz.

Sign Language is offered to all our children.  They see stories and songs in sign as well as learning basic signs.  Our teachers are also learning with the children and able to reinforce the sign with them.  A letter goes home with you to let you know the signs they learned so you may also use them in you house.  This has been a great way for helping young children increase their vocabulary as well as express their feeling.

Art is an class where children get to explore with this materials for create wonderful works of art.  They learn skills such as fine motor and colors.  They get to explore and have science as Incorporated as well.

We feel fortunate to include a variety of enrichment activities in our program.  They give children the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of learning experiences.
